2017 is halfway over.
Around this time in 2016 , I just started dating PJ. It was around two and a half months and for July 4th weekend, we spent it on the Big Island. This year? We are newly engaged and spent this past Sunday scouring wedding venues for our reception. What a change.
Who would have thought I’d be settled down and retired from the nomadic life? My love for travel started way before that but the whole nomad adventure started off more than three years ago and lasted two years. The mere thought of settling down in one place (again), meeting someone, and getting engaged was the last thing on my mind.
I left Washington DC while I was a mess. My life fell apart for many reasons and I picked up and left everything behind. I had no idea what was going to happen in the future but I needed to leave my past and change the present. So I left. I flew to as many places I could while working via the good ole’ interwebz. There was California, Thailand, Hawaii, Dubai, Morocco, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Taiwan, and South Korea. Oh yea, throw in Oregon, Colorado, Wisconsin, New York, Spain, and Portugal in there too.
Then I settled down in Hawaii after visiting Oahu, Maui, and Kauai for the umpteenth time. I had no idea how long I’d stay but I wanted to stay put in paradise for a little longer. Now, it’s time to make Hawaii home sweet home.
Home. Such a foreign concept to me.
Washington DC was never home and life as a digital nomad meant home was wherever I was at the moment. Making Hawaii my home, my place of comfort and sanctuary is new and different. How was it been? Well, honestly? Hard. Like it always is (and was).
It takes time to build a support system and a social network. I’m not in college or in my mid-twenties anymore. Back then, friendships were easily bought, sold, and solidified. As you get older, connections are harder to come by and that’s…life. So I will manage.
Anyway, here’s to the next half of 2017. 🙂
